Pheromone History
By Helena Berger
Pheromone extraction from insects has been done since the 1950s, with a thousand or more pheromones identified and many more still to come.
Chemical compounds similar to hormones, pheromones send messages to communicate to other insects. They were first called ecto-hormones (messengers outside the body), but the term was coined from the Greek root pherin (to carry) and hormone (to excite).
Ants, for example, secrete a which acts as a trail to reach a food source. They release a defense when the colony is under threat.
For integrated pest management (IPM), insect scientists and chemists cooperate to isolate particular pheromones employed by the more harmful pests and use them against the insect. While pheromone-baited traps are effective, they are not in themselves IPM which is a holistic way of thinking., not a particular product or strategy. Pheromones are often misconstrued as IPM by those working in the field. However, pheromone-baited traps are only one tool amongst many in the fight against pests. They detect insects locate areas of activity, but do not constitute the range of methods necessary to force the insects to leave or die.

Nature has designed pheromones in both primitive and highly developed forms. The Bolas spider, common to the US, lures certain male moths into its web by mimicking of the moths’ pheromones. They spin a thread which has a sticky drop of bolas, or liquid silk on the end of it, which sticks to their prey when they throw it.

continued______ pheromone -baited traps, they must be well-placed. These traps are good for monitoring pests which attack stored product, especially moths like Indian meal moths and Mediterranean flour moths. traps are especially effective in food warehouses and processing areas. Traps should be placed in a grid pattern to find new infestations. Vertical support beams can be used to set the pattern, as can other structural features of the warehouse. Generally, distances of every 50 are effective. In the case of an infestation, more traps should be placed in that area. Traps should also be put in corners and corridors, but avoid putting traps near doors and windows, whic could bring insects from outside. Traps for flying insects should be put 6 feet high. Yet one must be flexible in a trapping program, and able to move, add or remove traps as the need arises. traps are useful not just in big food warehouses and processing facilities, but also in smaller places like restaurants, food stores, pet stores, and homes.
Outdoor trapping is integral to an IPM. An outdoor trapping program will prevent pests from entering the building and lure insects from inside out into the traps.
